Public Transportation and Cars
Written by Editor on September 07, 2010 in Classic Car Articles
People who live in New York City generally do not own cars, or if they do, they don’t usually drive them within the city. The reason for this is that parking can be quite stressful, if not impossible, and also costs quite a bit. The city busses and subways are designed to get people wherever they want to go, at any time of the day or night. As a result, only some people have cars.
In other places in the state, such as upstate New York, cars are needed because there isn’t the same type of public transportation in place to move people around as easily. For this reason there are many more people who own, and drive cars in this part of the state. Typically, people who do have cars, have new cars in new york city. The reason their cars are so new is because they rarely drive them or because they are a part of the upper class and can afford luxuries such as new cars.
In fact most major cities, such as London, Chicago, Detroit, Miami and many other places, offer people the same type of public transportation that is found in New York. Miami has the worst in terms of public transportation in a metropolis, and there is no subway system there. There is Metro-rail but it only travels North and South, and only goes as far as West Palm beach.
In Atlanta, there is the Marta system which is quite adequate and services everyone living within the metro Atlanta area. It also has connecting service to other areas, outside of the perimeter of I-285. As a result, it is easy to get to and from work, the store, or just about anywhere you would like to go. Owning a car is hardly necessary there. In addition, the rush hour traffic in Atlanta is one of the worst in the country.
Ft. Lauderdale is even worse than Miami in terms of public transportation, or lack thereof. There is nothing but a series of city busses that travel up and down the main drags and only usually run until about 10:00 PM, which is a joke in comparison to other large cities. Cars are most definitely needed in Ft. Lauderdale and most areas in Florida as well, because there is nothing close to a decent form of public transportation in the entire state.
